Mice

  • Tiny sparrow-sized, weighing about ½ an ounce
  • Feces are blackish and have an odor that is strong and musty.
  • Rapid breeders. About six to ten litters per year with five to ten babies per litter.
  • Excellent senses (vision, hearing, smell and touch).
  • Do not travel very far from their nesting site, especially if food and shelter nearby.

Rats

  • Generally larger than mice, generally weighing between ½ to 1 pound.
  • Life span is only about a year, as they often victims to predators.
  • Brown, Black and Roof Rats amongst the most commonly known.
  • Have poor vision but an excellent sense of smell.
  • Will travel far for food.
  • Are carnivores.
  • Great survivors due to their wide taste in food types.
  • Like mice, can breed rapidly and become a challenging infestation quickly.
 

Detection – Where They’re Lurking

Agile and adaptable, rodents can thrive in a variety of conditions around properties. A sure sign that you have rodents is droppings or material such as paper, wires, PVC pipes, ducts, etc. that have been gnawed. Some places they can be found are

  • In the insulation of ceilings and walls.
  • In attics, crawling spaces, attics.

  • In stored boxes, paper or clothing

Tips

Good sanitation practices are always important, but because there are so many potential hiding places for rodents, even this will not ensure they are kept out!

  • Keep home, yards and alleys clean.
  • Take junk to the dump!
  • Pick up garbage from around trash cans.
  • Close lids tightly.
  • Cover openings to your property. Rodents need only small spaces to get in.
  • Stack firewood away from buildings and keep 18 inches off the ground.
  • Bushes should be planted at least 3 feet from the house.
  • Do not leave unconsumed pet food outside.
  • Keep trees cut so that rodents such as roof mice don’t climb onto your house from branches hanging over the roof.
