At Arizona’s Best Choice Pest & Termite Services, our termite control specialists use Altriset to protect homes here in the Valley and Casa Grande. But, just what is Altriset, and why do we use it? In this blog, we’ll review some of the key differences that distinguish Altriset from other termiticides, and why you should call our team for all your termite control and inspection needs.
Not all termite treatments are the same
There are many different termite treatments—known in our industry as “termiticides” and classified separately from pesticides—out there. But, they’re not all the same. Most of the chemicals and treatments you can buy in a hardware store are weaker than those used by pest control professionals: the stronger and more effective the chemical, the greater likelihood that state certification is required to be able to work with it and apply it. Unfortunately, most of these store-bought treatments just aren’t going to eliminate the termite problem or prevent reinfestation over the long term.
Even among pest control companies, there are key differences. Popular termiticides such as Termidor and Premise just aren’t as effective or long-lasting as what we use here at Arizona’s Best Choice Pest & Termite Services: Altriset.
What makes Altriset so effective?
Altriset is applied in a trench around the home, forming a line of defense between the soil and your home’s slab foundation. As subterranean termites come into contact with the Altriset-treated soil, they are exposed to the delayed-action formula. In the time before the Altriset goes to work, the termites travel amongst other termites in the colony, widely and quickly spreading the termiticide. Altriset paralyzes the termites’ mouths, preventing them from consuming the cellulose they need to live. This immediately stops the damage to your home and, within days, all affected members of the colony die.
Unlike many other store-bought and professional-grade termiticides on the market that just kill termites upon contact, the delayed mortality feature of Altriset gives the termiticide time to be spread throughout the colony. In both the field and lab experiments conducted by Altriset, this strategy is highly effective: Altriset found that even adding a few Altriset-exposed termites to a colony of non-exposed termites resulted in a 100% mortality rate.
How long does Altriset protect your home?
Over time, all termiticides eventually begin to wear off and become less effective. This occurs as rain washes out the soil around your home, reducing the prevalence of the chemical barrier. However, one important distinction between Altriset and many other termiticides is that Altriset lasts longer and performs better, with only slight drop-offs in the performance year-after-year. In fact, in a test coordinated with the U.S. Forest Service, Altriset provided lasting protection from subterranean termites for several test homes in Arizona, Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina for 9 years!
Overall, if you’re looking for a long-lasting termite treatment that will protect your home better for many years to come, Altriset is the right choice.
Is Altriset safe to use?
When safely applied by a professional termite control technician, yes. Altriset is actually the first termite treatment of its kind to qualify for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Reduced-Risk Pesticide Program, and is approved for use throughout the continental United States. It is specially formulated to have a low impact on honeybees, earthworms, and other non-termite organisms.
Overall, the technicians here at Arizona’s Best Choice Pest & Termite Services are able to use far less, per-gallon, of Altriset as part of an effective termite treatment strategy than many other brands of termiticide. This lowers the overall environmental impact of our termite treatment.
